The Midwives Collective and Gallery is proud to be part of an unique opportunity to honor the artistic efforts of Mexican artists in “Recognition”, an exhibition presented by The Printmakers Open Forum of Philagrafika 2010: The Graphic Unconscious.  “Recognition” is not exhibition to exclusively spotlight Mexican Artists but rather to chronicle, celebrate and declare that these artists within the Mexican culture have had a long-standing relationship with this traditional art form.  “Recognition” will bring to the forefront the renowned and the upcoming Mexican artists.  Similar to how the printmaking process lends itself to have limitless unique qualities, “Recognition” is lending a platform for these artists to display their approaches of ingenuity and originality through print.

In addition to an extended two-month gallery show, The Midwives Collective and Gallery has arranged for a Marble Lithography demonstration, La Ceiba Grafica, with artist and initiator of this movement, Per Anderson, on Saturday, February 6^th, 2010 at 1:30 PM – 4:30 PM.  His demonstration will elaborate on how his need for a low overhead led to use of local resources, i.e. leveled marble and onyx, and the development of technological designs and solutions that have received international praise for exceptional quality within his work. La Ceiba Grafica is increasing in popularity throughout many Litho studios in Mexico.

Philagrafika 2010: The Graphic Unconscious” is the inaugural presentation of an international multi-sited exhibition that shall occur in Philadelphia every four years. This festival explores the contemporary visual art of printmaking with emphasis on the visual, intellectual and creative approaches pursued and how these approaches relate to social and political make-up of our world.

Philadelphia, PA…On Friday, February 5th, 2010…In concurrent celebration of the city-wide event “Philagrafika 2010: The Graphic Unconscious, The Midwives Collective and Gallery will host the opening for Philagrafika “Recognition” and will offer gallery hours throughout this weekend located at their suite at 1241 Carpenter Street in beloved South Philadelphia from 6:00 P.M till 10 P.M.  On Saturday, February 6^th, 2010 The Midwives Collective and Gallery will be open to guests the usual hours of 12 P.M. till 5 P.M.   Additionally, on Saturday, February 6^th, there will be an exclusive Marble Lithography demonstration, La Ceiba Grafica, by artist, Per Anderson from 1:30 PM - 4:30 PM.  The opening weekend will conclude on Sunday, February 7^th, 2010 with extended gallery hours from 1PM – 6PM.  As always, the gallery is open every Saturday 12 PM – 5PM through the duration of the exhibition, Saturday March 27^th, 2010 or by appointment only (in which, contact themwc@gmail.com.)  There is no admission fee to enjoy this show.
